Amir Khan v Samuel Vargas Odds and Predictions

Amir Khan’s Ring Return

Coming soon… Amir Khan v Samuel Vargas. Amir Khan was absent from the ring for almost 2 years after suffering defeat at the hands of Canelo Alvarez in 2016. When he stepped back into the squared circle against Canadian Phil Lo Greco on his return, it lasted all of 40 seconds. Khan dropped Greco with a counter right hand and followed up with the stoppage; Greco was totally unable to defend himself against the barrage of unanswered shots at the Echo Arena, Liverpool.

At the start of the year, Khan signed with a new promoter and joined Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. Khan insists that he can become world champion again for the third time… and with the huge money spinner and domestic fight against Kell Brook on the horizon, it certainly wasn’t a surprise that he signed with Matchroom.

Khan has signed a three-fight deal and his upcoming match against Samuel Vargas will be the second fight of the agreement; this leaves the possibility of a huge night of boxing for Khan at the end of 2018 should he win.

Amir Khan Promises an Explosive Performance

You can watch Amir Khan’s welterweight clash against Samuel Vargas live on Sky Sports, September 8 from the Birmingham Arena.

Khan will be looking to deliver another explosive performance and he’s promised to provide a great performance again when he meets Canadian based Columbian Samuel Vargas.

Khan had a message for his supporters:

“Fans will see another explosive performance on September 8.”

“I didn’t get a chance to show everyone what I had been working on during my time out against Lo Greco. But you saw the punch power, accuracy, speed and timing and you’ll see it again against Vargas. I always make it exciting; it’s going to be another big bang.”

Head to Head

This will be Khan’s second fight in five months. He fought Phil Lo Greco in April and destroyed his opponent in 40 seconds. ‘King Khan’ will be looking to make another statement when he shares the ring with his latest challenger.

The odds are definitely in his favour right now, with some bookies offering odds of 1/33 on a Khan victory. Currently the best you can get on his victory is 1/20 at Bet365, Ladbrokes and Coral.

Khan’s record stands at an impressive 32 wins from 36 fights and 4 defeats. Khan has lost to Breidis Prescott, Lamont Peterson, Danny Garcia and Saul Alvarez – and has picked up valuable experience in those defeats as well as his victories against some impressive fighters.

The fight, which will be shown live on Sky Sports, will see challenger, Samuel Vargas, attempt to shock the boxing world and claim victory. As it’s such an unlikely outcome, you can get odds as high as 10/1 from William Hill and Betstars.

Vargas’ record currently stands at 29 wins, three defeats and two draws. Two of his defeats came against two world class fighters in Errol Spence Jr and Danny Garcia – he lost to both fighters by TKO. Vargas will hope to have learned from the defeats and use what he learned against Khan.

Both men have previously fought Danny Garcia – Khan lost by TKO in round four while Vargas was defeated by TKO in round seven.

Vargas stands slightly taller at 5’9 compared to Khan who is 5’8. They both have similar reach with Vargas at 72” and Khan at 71”. Power seems to lie with Khan; he has 20 stoppages from 66 fights – a KO percentage of 53. Vargas has fewer stoppages having stopped 14 opponents from his 34 fights – A KO percentage of 41.

What Would Defeat Mean?

Defeat would be disastrous for Amir Khan’s career as it would put an end to fighting for welterweight World honours at the end of the year. No fighter wants to go back to the drawing board after getting so close to that mega fight. It would certainly end talks of Khan fighting Manny Pacquiao, Kell Brook, Keith Thurman and Errol Spence. Defeat may leave Khan looking for a new promoter as his current deal is about to expire.

Victory for Vargas would propel him to the next level and open a lot of doors for the Columbian fighter.

Prediction

Khan has to go into the fight as a huge favourite. He has experience fighting in world title fights and shared the ring with some of the best boxers that boxing can offer. After his two-year break, he looked hungry and eager to get his career moving in the right direction; victory against Greco certainly laid down a maker and he’ll want to improve on that against Vargas. Our prediction is for Khan to win the fight by stoppage or wide on points.

With Khan there is always a risk that one punch could end the fight. We only have to look at the Prescott fight where Khan was a huge favourite. The fight may have taken place in 2008, but to this day question marks still remain about his chin and punch resistance. It may be worth putting money on Vargas by stoppage or knockout.

Who is the Favourite?

Bookmakers have Khan a huge favourite and at 1/33 (William Hill) – they see the fight as a foregone conclusion.

But, bookmakers don’t get it always right and with Khan’s questionable chin there is always an outside chance and potential to earn a lot of money.
